The Seahawks organization is a giant corporation that has every right to protect the integrity of its image and use that image to make money.
The team has already trademarked things like the 12 Flag and their mascot, Blitz. They also own the rights to phrases such as “Legion of Boom,” Spirit of 12″ and “Bring in the 12.”
But lately the Hawks have been a little aggressive about securing intellectual property, according to a prominent sports entertainment lawyer.
The team is reportedly trying to trademark words that seem like anybody should be able to use, such as “boom” and “go Hawks.” They’re even trying to trademark the number 12.
Many fans think that’s going way too far.
“That’s asinine, yeah,” said Holly Diaz. “It’s a number. We use it all the time, so when when we say twelve we have to pay them some money? I think that’s crazy. Nuts.”
Others, however, think it’s a good business move for the team.
“I still like the idea they could trademark that, because that’s one of the most important things we have,” said Mari Sopina.
The Seahawks didn’t return phone calls for comment on the story.
